Who Are The Richest Names Amongst The New York Elite?

July 25, 2021

One of the favourite playgrounds of the rich and famous, New York is home to no shortage of incredibly wealthy individuals. Hundreds of successful business moguls, traders, musicians, models and more make up some of the city’s 8.4 million residents – so who are the richest amongst them?

Unsurprisingly, the city’s wealthiest individuals aren’t exactly the youngest or hottest – but they’re certainly filthy rich.

Here are the names of the ten wealthiest individuals in New York.

Donald Newhouse

Net Worth: $12.1 billion

What do Condé Nast, Reddit and the Discovery Channel all have in common? They’re all owned, or at least part-owned, by Advance Publications. At the helm of Advance Publications is Donald Newhouse, 92-year-old heir to the Newhouse fortune, who became sole beneficiary after the death of his brother Samuel Newhouse back in 2017.

Gerard & Alain Wertheimer

Net Worth: $14.6 billion

The Wertheimer brothers inherited the fashion house Chanel from their grandfather Pierre Wertheimer and have co-owned the brand ever since. Pierre Wertheimer co-founded the Coco Chanel brand in the 1920s, with Alain Wertheimer now working as the company’s chairman.

Len Blavatnik

Net Worth: $16.3 billion

Blavatnik’s fortune comes from Access Industries, which owns major shares in names across varied industries, from the chemical company LyondellBasell to the fashion brand Tory Burch. With a net worth of over $16 billion, it’s thought that Blavatnik is New York’s 7th richest resident.

Stephen Schwarzman

Net Worth: $17.5 billion

As the man in charge at the world’s largest buyout firm, Blackstone, it’s unsurprising that Schwarzman has amassed quite the fortune, though he has donated millions to charities across New York. In a report by Forbes, it was recently estimated that Blackstone – founded by Schwarzman in 1985 – has $439 billion in assets.

Carl Icahn

Net Worth: $17.8 billion

Another big name in big city finance, Icahn is the CEO and founder of New York holding company Icahn Enterprises. As with many of the city’s most successful moguls, however, this isn’t the only string to his bow – Icahn also served as special adviser to the Trump administration.

Leonard Lauder

Net Worth: $18.5 billion

Yes, his name does sound familiar – Leonard Lauder joined his mother Esteé Lauder’s company back in 1958. Lauder eventually became the company’s CEO and, before retiring in 1999, was responsible for the company’s acquisition of beauty giants MAC, Bobbi Brown and Aveda.

Rupert Murdoch

Net Worth: $20.6 billion

Unsurprisingly making it into the top three is Rupert Murdoch, who famously controls many of the world’s biggest media corporations. Murdoch is the man behind News Corp, a media giant controlling world-renowned publications including The Wall Street Journal. He’s also the man behind Fox News.

David Koch

Net Worth: $42.7 billion

Koch was previously the executive vice president of his family’s business, Koch Industries, where he is now the company director alongside his brother Charles, who heads the company from its headquarters in Wichita. According the Forbes, he’s also famous for his philanthropic efforts, too.

Michael Bloomberg

Net Worth: $56.1 billion

Beginning his career on Wall Street, Bloomberg co-founded his company in 1981 and owns 88% of it; it’s now worth over $9 billion. He was New York City’s mayor for over a decade, from 2001 to 2013, before resuming his role as Bloomberg’s CEO at the end of 2014.
