With bending palm trees, white sand beaches and dazzling blue seas — the Maldives are a picture of paradise.
In the Indian Ocean just south of the Indian subcontinent, this island chain offers some of the world’s most exclusive relaxation. If you like being pampered, on one of the prettiest beaches you’ve ever seen, then the Maldives is for you.
So, you’re convinced to take the trip, but when and where should you go? Don’t worry, DDW has got you covered.
Finding the best weather while visiting the Maldives is a bit counterintuitive. Our winter, particularly the cold and dark month of January, is the best time to visit these small islands.
The reason is, it’s cool. By cool I mean 82 degrees Fahrenheit (28 C) by the way, so you will still be able to get your suntan on.
January is also in the middle of the dry season — expect around 9 hours of pure sunshine every day.
You have booked your ticket for January, now it’s time to decide on an island or islands.
As the Maldives is an island chain, you will have plenty to choose from. Although you will have to look into it yourself to truly decide where to go, we have some suggestions.
First, if you love food, head to Amilla Island — one of the largest in the Maldives, this island has seven restaurants catering to different tastes. Whether you are gluten-free or vegan, there is something for you. Try feasting on Japanese fusion cuisine in an overwater setting, it’s hard to beat.
If diving and snorkelling are more your scenes, check out Baros in the North Male Atoll. Although many islands offer great snorkelling, Baros has a reef just 20 metres from shore. It also boasts dozens of incredible dive sites less than an hour away. From great reefs to shipwrecks, the scenery is incredible.
Check out the PADI Gold Palm Dive Centre for a night snorkelling experience.
Finally, I’ll recommend Huvafen Fushi for its sheer luxury. Located in the North Male Atoll this island has untouched beaches and a luxury spa.
In fact, the island boasts the world’s first underwater treatment room. You can work on your wellness while watching the fish and coral right from the window. Celebrity skincare treatment and tailored massages are on offer as is private yoga.
To be sure, this is just a glimpse of what the Maldives has to offer, with so much to see and do — it pays to do a little research before you go.
From relaxing while sipping cocktails on a beach to diving and snorkelling in some of the world’s most pristine ecosystems to working on your wellness in style, the Maldives has it all. The Maldives are a great option for a family vacation too. Don’t worry about flying with your kids. There are great activities for toddlers on a plane that will keep them entertained.
So, book your ticket and journey to the far side of the earth, because paradise is waiting.
