Following a few years of Covid restrictions — closed movie theatres and lockdowns — cinemas are back in full swing. With this, new releases are coming out in theatres once again.
This year looks to be a good one for cinema lovers with blockbuster hits like Batman, released last month, driving people back to the cinema once again.
May will see several new releases, here’s what we are most excited about.
Dr Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
Scott Derrickson brings back Dr Strange in this next instalment of the Marvel Studio’s hit. Benedict Cumberbatch comes back as Strange alongside Elizabeth Olsen reprising her role as Scarlet Witch.
It continues the story of Dr Stephen Strange (Cumberbatch), a neurosurgeon whose life was irrevocably changed after a car accident robbed him of the use of his hands. Not to reveal too much, Strange becomes a sorcerer — and fights dark forces threatening Earth.
Judging by the trailer, the movie looks to be an action-packed sequel with out-of-this-world special effects. It looks to take a dark turn with a visibly destroyed NYC in some of the scenes. Marvel fans will certainly not want to miss the next chapter in the Marvel Universe.
Dr Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will be in Cinemas on May 5 in the UK and May 6 in the US.
Firestarter
Based on Stephen King’s novel, this harrowing thriller starring Zac Efron and Ryan Kiera Armstong is set to keep viewers on the edge of their seats.
The movie centres on a young girl (Armstrong) who has the power, or curse, to start fires spontaneously. One problem is, that she has trouble controlling this power. Another, and potentially worse problem is that sinister forces are trying to kidnap her and turn her into a weapon of mass destruction.
After several slightly disturbing scenes of temperatures rising in school classrooms and fires starting unintentionally, audiences see Zak Efron attempting to help his daughter control this power.
The movie looks to be seriously tense, and with Stephen King’s writing abilities coupled with Keith Thomas’ directing — I’m betting it will be a film that will keep audiences captivated, and a little bit nervous, throughout.
Firestarter will be in cinemas on May 13
Top Gun: Maverick
Top Gun’s long-awaited sequel is finally here with Tom Cruise reprising his role as Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell. The movie will premiere at the respectable Cannes Film Festival before coming to cinemas around the globe.
The trailer shows a visibly older ‘Maverick’ who is brought on to instruct younger pilots in the art of flying fighter jets in a particularly badass way.
The movie seems to be jam-packed with the cocky, thrilling and downright dangerous moves that made the original movie an instant 1980s classic. For anyone into actions movies, this should be on the top of your list next month.
Top Gun: Maverick is in cinemas on May 27.
Some other honourable mentions include Downton Abbey: A New Era in US cinemas on May 20 and The Bob’s Burger Movie out on May 27.
Overall, May looks to be a great start to a cinema lover’s summer with some great titles coming out in June and July as well. These are certainly movies you won’t want to miss.
