Met Gala 2021: Everything We Know So Far

August 15, 2021

Having been cancelled for 2020 and postponed at the beginning of this year, there’s now finally less than a month to wait until the most extravagant night of the celebrity world makes its much-anticipated return.

At its heart, the Met Gala is a celebration of New York’s prestigious Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, with the funds raised by its A-list guests contributing to the survival and development of the establishment. However, the Met Gala is perhaps best known for its incredible red carpet looks…

Famously considered fashion’s biggest night out, the Met Gala consistently sees no shortage of memorable moments occur – it’s easy to see why so many of us look forward to it each year.

As we approach the return of the Met Gala at long last, here’s everything we know about this year’s event.

When Is The Met Gala 2021?

Since 2005, the Met Gala has taken place in early May, with last year’s event all set to take place on May 4th 2020 before the COVID-19 pandemic forced organisers to pull the plug.

With many believing the situation may have resolved by the new year, 2021’s event was initially expected to take place in May once again – that was, of course, before a second wave of the pandemic took hold. Once again, organisers were forced to change their plans, initially announcing that the event would be cancelled for a second time before eventually deciding to simply postpone.

With that, we’re now on track for the Met Gala to make its long-awaited return on September 13th.

Where Is The Met Gala Being Taking Place In 2021?

This year’s event will take place, as is traditional, at the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The world-famous gallery, located at 1000 5th Avenue, will be closed to the public as organisers work hard to transform the venue for the evening.

What’s The Theme At This Year’s Met Gala?

With last year’s event cancelled, many wondered whether or not organisers would stick with their previously announced theme for 2020, About Time: Fashion And Duration.

However, it was eventually decided that 2021’s event would take place with a new theme, opting for a two-part exhibition on American fashion across the next two Met Gala events, In America: A Lexicon Of Fashion. 2022’s theme is expected to follow on nicely, having been announced as In America: An Anthology Of Fashion.

Who Is On The Met Gala Committee For 2021?

Chairwoman of the Met Gala, Vogue editor Anna Wintour, has once again assembled a carefully selected team to assist in planning the event.

Timothee Chalamet, Billie Eilish, Naomi Osaka and Amanda Gorman have been working with Wintour on this year’s Met Gala. They’ll be taking over from Emma Stone, Meryl Streep, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Nicholas Ghesquiere, who had planned 2020’s ill-fafed event.

Who’s Hosting This Year’s Met Gala?

Committee members Billie Eilish and Amanda Gorman are expected to host the evening, with an additional star musical performer yet to be announced as the evening’s entertainment. There is, of course, a chance that Billie will take on the role for herself, though there’s no confirmation of this just yet.

Who’s Invited To This Year’s Met Gala?

There’s no way to know for certain which celebrities will be walking the red carpet at the 2021 Met Gala until the night itself, though we can certainly take clues from previous guest lists.

If earlier events are anything to go by, we can expect appearances from Lady Gaga, Zendaya, Beyoncé and Jay-Z, the Kardashian-Jenner family and Harry Styles, just to name a few.

The exclusive, carefully selected list of guests are limited to around 650-700 figures from the world of celebrity, art, fashion and media. There are additional seats available, though these cost $30,000 per ticket – a $10,000 increase on the previous cost, as organisers wished to emphasise the exclusivity of the event.

Is it too late to secure a ticket for ourselves?
