As part of our latest series ‘Conversation Skills’ – DDW sits down with the DJ to the stars DJ Cruz. Born and raised in Zurich, educated by the hip-hop scene and taken under the wing of the ultra-famous, the multifaceted DJ opens up about what exactly makes him tick. Here’s his take.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Maybe not behind the decks, but I could definitely see myself staying in the music business. I’m currently reading about Web 3.0, NFTs and the Metaverse, I think that the next few years will bring enormous changes to most industries. I’m excited to see what the future brings and as long as I’m healthy and happy in 10 years – I’m cool with wherever the journey is taking me.
If you could do just one thing for the rest of your life, what would that be?
Hard question… probably DJing, I mean that is truly what I love doing.
Where are your go-to places to find peace of mind?
Since the start of the pandemic, I do a 20min stretch routine almost daily. That’s a peaceful start to the day. Other than that, it’s a combination of me-time, time with my friends, family, nature and good sleep! I learned how important sleep is during the pandemic too, I was chronically underslept, and that wore me down.
What’s the most important thing that you’ve learned so far?
To follow my gut feeling. That’s powerful.
What are your top 5 party hot spots around the globe?
In the Summer it’s the South of France – Cannes, St Tropez and Monaco.
During the year I love Paris, London and NY – so many crazy memories DJing there.
For NYE, it’s St Barths and Dubai is always fun too.
Ups, that’s more than 5…
How do you want the world to remember you?
As an honest, authentic and fun person.
For many years, my entire focus was on DJing. Once lockdown hit, I found myself more interested in social issues. At a later stage in life, I would love to find fulfilling ways to give back.
Do you have a mantra that you live by?
Not really. Being kind, grateful, working hard, enjoying life, not stressing about unnecessary things and living consciously. Easier said than done, but that’s the spirit!
Who do you look up to?
I don’t have role models in that sense, but I do look up to people who really are about what they do. I usually always have a few people I’m interested in and reading about their work. Currently, it’s Tim Ferris (via his Podcast), Business-Guru Naval Ravikant and Super-Producer Jeff Bhasker. And I’m reading Elon Musk’s biography, that’s inspiring too.
Name one thing you can’t live without.
Music.
What don’t you want to die wondering about?
What my life could have been, if I hadn’t always tried my best.
