BAFTA awards: royal appearances, stunning gowns, and gasp another wrong winner announcement. Here’s everything you missed from last night.
We all love a reason to celebrate and the BAFTA 2023 awards were no exception. Held only yesterday night at the Royal Festival Hall in London, here’s a runwdown of all the things you might’ve missed.
Best Dressed
It wasn’t particularly warm in London yesterday, but as is often the case, fashion didn’t know of any temperature scales at the 2023 BAFTA Awards. Stars paraded in strappy gowns, plunging necklines and bare shoulders – to the eye of the beholder it could’ve easily been mid-August instead of drop-dead winter February.
Amongst some of the most exciting gowns we highlight Jodie Turner-Smith‘s, a purple feathery Gucci number with sequins, tulle, and a statement choker to match. Equally surreal was Sheila Atim‘s Prada gown, a long tin-foil-like dress combined with long elbow-length gloves, or Florence Pugh‘s Nina Ricci orange extravaganza. As for the men, we stand by Eddie Redmayne‘s Alexander McQueen suit, with mildly flared trousers and a mesmerizing neckline.
The Winners
As we all know, the BAFTA Awards offer plenty of opportunities to indulge in some good old-fashioned celebrity gossip and marvel at some truly stunning gowns. But let’s not forget the real reason we’re all here – to celebrate some of the most outstanding achievements in film.
This year’s leading actor and actress awards went to none other than the incredible Cate Blanchett for her powerhouse performance in “Tár,” and rising star Austin Butler, who blew us all away with his portrayal of “Elvis.” When it came to the films, “All Quiet on the Western Front” walked away with an incredible seven awards, including the coveted Best Film and Best Director accolades. Meanwhile, “The Banshees of Inisherin” and “Elvis” both received multiple awards (four, to be precise), cementing their status as top contenders in the film industry.
The Royal Family
Nothing screams British quite like the Royal family. Dressed in a black tuxedo and holding hands of his grinning wife, The Prince and Princess of Wales made quite the entrance at the award shows, which they have been attending since Prince William became president in 2010. As for Kate, she continued her standing tradition of wearing British designers on the BAFTA’s red-carpet, this time opting for a a re-worked Alexander McQueen piece which she complimented with Zara earrings and a BAFTA 2023 favorite; elegant arm gloves.
The Gossip
We thought we wouldn’t see it again but, as Justin Bieber so wisely said “Never say never”. During the presentation for Best Supporting Actress, CODA actor Troy Kotsur mistakenly declared Carey Mulligan as the winner, only to have to correct himself moments later and award the honor to Kerry Condon instead. Awkward.
