All The Best Shows Nominated At This Year’s Emmy’s

August 1, 2020

Celebrating Our Golden Age of Television

With virtually every major award show on the planet postponed or cancelled it is with great joy and cautious optimism that we welcome the Emmy’s announcement to proceed with their awards this 21st of September. Broadcasting on the America ABC network, these awards recognise excellence in the television industry and feature some of the industry’s most famous names.

This year’s well nominees were announced this week to great fanfare and controversy. For the first time in history, streaming network Netflix has overtaken traditional broadcasters and long-time favourite cable network HBO (coming in at a record 160 nominations for its late versus HBO’s 107).

As the rivalry between traditional television and streaming services intensifies across mutually scathing press headlines, we take a moment to step back and give you the ultimate list of Emmy-nominees to watch this week. Here are our favourites and the full list of nominees – kick back and enjoy the golden-age of television…

Our favourites

The Watchmen

Snagging a total of 26 coveted nominations, Watchmen is this year’s must-watch show. Created by Damon Lindelof; this limited series is the sequel to the graphic novel of the same name. Featuring the heartbreaking true-life story of the Tulsa race riots and other pivotal moments of US history, presented in the context of an alternate history with superheroes, this show is timely, powerful and extremely well executed. Do not miss it.

Succession

Succession — Emmy nominated

The show that has everyone talking. With loathsome characters you love to hate, rampant greed and Machiavellian tactics this series has engulfed dinner-table conversations all over the globe. Rumoured to be based on the Murdoch and Hearst dynasties, just two seasons of this show are simply not enough.

Ozark

Ozark — Emmy nominated

A conventional white-collar family man and his wife relocate their family to the deep southern US state of Missouri to run a secret money-laundering scheme for a drug lord out to kill them…the scheme works until it all starts unravelling. Ozark comes back to the Emmys with 18 nominations after winning a series of awards last year.

Euphoria

Euphoria — Emmy nominated

Euphoria joins Succession in HBO’s slate of marquee shows at the Emmys. Featuring IT girl and powerhouse Zendaya in the lead, this teen psychedelic drama produced by Drake is epic, dark and moody.

Schitt’s Creek

Schitt’s Creek

A hilarious comedy about a billionaire and his family that lose everything overnight in an investment scam and are forced to relocate from their gilded penthouse on Park Avenue to Schitt’s Creek – a town in the middle of nowhere and the last remaining asset they owned that was not repossessed by creditors and the IRS. Funny, heartwarming and honest – this family comedy is deserving of its many nominations this year.

The Marvellous Mrs. Maisel

The Marvellous Mrs. Maisel

Amazon Studios brings us this impeccably created show about a house wife in the 1950s that breaks the glass ceiling and becomes an international stand up comedy star. Created by Amy Sherman-Palladino (best known for creating the wildly successful ‘Gilmore Girls’) this show touches on important social issues whilst delivering non-stop humour and warmth.
