THE 79th Golden Globes took place last night in unusual fashion amid widespread controversy over diversity and amoral practices.
No celebrities were present at the ceremony, which was not televised or streamed online, with the winners announced via social media. Here’s a breakdown of the night’s winners and losers:
The Power of The Dog and West Side Story win three awards each
Netflix drama The Power of the Dog won best picture – drama, while director Jane Campion became the third woman in the awards’ history to win best director. Kodi Smit-McPhee also won best supporting actor in any motion picture for his role in the critically acclaimed Western.
The other big winner of the night was Steven Spielberg’s remake of West Side Story, which won best musical or comedy film and claimed two acting prizes for Rachel Zegler and Arianna DeBose.
“There is still work to be done, but when you’ve worked so hard on a project – infused with blood, sweat, tears and love – having the work seen and acknowledged is always going to be special. Thank you,” DeBose said on Twitter.
Zegler added: “I got cast as Maria in West Side Story on 9 January 2019. And I just won a Golden Globe for that same performance, on 9 January 2022. Life is very strange.”
Will Smith took home another of the night’s biggest prizes in best actor in a drama for his performance in King Richard, while HBO drama Succession won big in the TV categories.
